Amsler Grid Test: A Window into Macular Health

What It Is

The Amsler Grid Test is a simple yet powerful diagnostic tool used to detect visual disturbances affecting the central retina, particularly the macula. Developed in 1945 by Swiss ophthalmologist Marc Amsler, the test consists of a square grid of horizontal and vertical lines with a central fixation dot.
Despite its simplicity, it remains one of the most effective tools for identifying early signs of macular disease.

How It Works

• The patient views the grid from a standard reading distance (approximately 30 cm).
• Each eye is tested individually, while the other is covered.
• The patient focuses on the central dot and observes the surrounding grid.

If any of the following are noticed, it may indicate macular pathology:

• Distorted or wavy lines
• Blurred areas
• Missing or dark patches
• Irregular spacing of the grid

These abnormalities may be associated with conditions such as:

• Age‑related Macular Degeneration (AMD)
• Macular edema
• Central serous retinopathy
• Choroidal neovascularization
